The real reason extendable tables are more popular than ever

Extendable tables are growing in popularity.

There are two main reasons why more people are investing in an extendable table.

  • House design has changed
  • We live differently from how we did, even just twenty years ago.

2020 House design

Space is at a premium, and with the constant need for more homes and a growing population, home designers are decreasing the sizes of new homes to make them more ‘affordable’. Even sizeable homes are laid out differently. There’s a main central hub – usually a large kitchen, but this comes at the cost of space elsewhere. Often it’s a separate dining room that is sacrificed, but sometimes space is taken from the living area too.

This means there is less space for a formal dining table – but, despite there being less space, there is still the need.

How we live has changed

Our living habits and lifestyles have changed too. Often, busy lives mean people eat separately, but increasing costs mean that teenagers and young adults tend to live at home with their parents for longer.

And, when you have guests or even just the extended family around, you may find you need more space than usual. Perhaps you would like to close the door on the fall-out from having cooked up a storm, to relax and enjoy your food in a quiet and orderly room.

With smaller dining spaces this can be difficult, but this is where extendable tables are really useful. It doesn’t dwarf the space when a large table isn’t needed, but it delivers the places when required.

Here, at Box 15, we have a wide range of extendable tables that allow you to mix and match the table frame with the tabletop finish so you can find one that will work with your living space. This approach gives you complete versatility and design control over your dining space.

Each product within our  range of extendable tables offers something different:

The FRAME is an extendable table where the tabletop extension resides beneath the tabletop, taking up no additional storage space when not in use. When required, you simply need to slide the tabletop further up the frame revealing the extension which you then lift and rotate before pushing it back towards the original tabletop to connect the extension to the main tabletop. An extended table in seconds. We also offer the FRAME in two sizes – one perfect for parties of up to 8, and one suitable for up to ten place settings at a time.

For those with rooms of limited width, or where tables need to be stored in a narrow walkway or hallway, the SLIM extendable console table is perfect. With a width of just 470mm, the SLIM console table stores the additional leaf beneath the tabletop. The frame simply extends to support the leaf which then folds out. This is available to seat 2-6 people, or, for additional width, there’s also an XL version of the SLIM which has a double folding extension – two leaves that fold out to fit up to 8 people. These leaves are also stored beneath the main tabletop when not in use.

For a more versatile option, consider the OKEY DOKEY. This is a height-adjustable extending dining table which can be lowered to create the perfect coffee table. As well as having a height-adjustable mechanism which enables it to be raised, the OKEY DOKEY extending table also allows additional leaves to be pulled out for extra space to seat more friends.

If you want the opportunity to get extra length from your dining table, the MORE extendable table frame gives you the option of pulling out the extension and then drawing the tabletops up and into place for added length – perfect for the additional platters at Christmas or  Friday nights with more friends. Available in two different sizes, the MORE extendable table can offer space to seat up to ten – perfect for all your evening soirees!

A practical and stylish solution, the CAPOTAVOLA has manual extensions on the short side of the table. It can seat between 2 and (on the larger model), up to ten people. Although, there is a smaller model if space is tight.

For elegance and ease of use, the VULCANO extendable table offers an automatic extension of the central panel to get more of your favourite faces around your dinner table without lifting a panel with an automatic mechanism that does it all for you.

This has been a whistle-stop tour around some of our more popular extendable tables so, if you’re short on space but still dream of being the ultimate dinner party host, or even simply fitting all of your bowls on the table so you don’t have to keep ducking back and forth from the kitchen, check out our range of extendable tables at Box 15.
