Thinking of extending your worktop space? Here’s the biggest decision you’ll need to make

Small kitchens. They’re fine most of the time, but occasionally – like Christmas, or Easter or even that family Sunday roast, you need a little more, you know, space.

That’s why we have a range of worktop and countertop extensions, often called transformables, to fit every space.

However, before you start shopping there’s one question you need to be able to answer. Do you want a seamless worktop – one whereby your extended worktop sits at exactly the same height as the current worktop, or do you want a couple of centimetres step between the two different worktops to separate the spaces?

Separate spaces that complement your kitchen

If you’re looking for a worktop that delivers separate spaces that compliment your kitchen, a worktop extender that hides in plain sight over an existing table or island is an option for you. This design can be seen in the TOP 33 worktop extender. This particular model sits on top of an existing worktop such as a tabletop or island. It is suspended above the tabletop on runners and can be pulled out and locked into place to literally double your food preparation area in an instant.

These ingenious units an extend width ways or length ways, or if you don’t have the space for that, there are some models available that extend at an angle from your original table or island worktop.

The SESTANTE, for example, slides out and revolves to create a cute table that hides away over a standard worktop unit. When extended, it sits at a 135-degree angle from the original unit, rather than becoming a lengthways or widthways continuation of it.

With these kinds of spaces, often choosing a complimenting colour such as picking up oaky tones from the cupboards or the pine of the kitchen table could be a good idea if set against a stone or marble worktop. Complementing the colour of the worktop can look more effective than trying to match the worktop with a step between the two. Whatever look you choose to go for, you can get the look and style that you want for your kitchen because we sell frames and worktops separately.

A seamless continuation of your existing worktop

If you’re looking for a worktop that clips upwards to create a seamless continuation of your existing worktop, your choices are more limited. However, we still have a wide range of units that can be added to an existing worktop to create a seamless continuation. When not in use, these can be hidden away in a drawer to maximise the space you have when the worktop extension isn’t needed.

With the Voila table extension, the extension hides behind a standard drawer front and can be pulled outward and clicked into place to provide a seamless continuation between the worktop and the worktop extension. Voila is rated to 100kg, and can extend your tabletop or workspace up to 1000mm and, because we sell the frame separately, you can find a tabletop to match perfectly with the aesthetics of your kitchen, dining room or laundry room, or even secure more of the original worktop materials. If doing this, just be mindful of the load limit. Other seamless solutions we offer include the Opla pull-out shelf, the FlipTop Pull-Out Countertop Extension which pulls out and clicks up into alignment with the original worktop, the Sandwich or the Homework which pulls down as a wider drawer front and then extends with no legs to get in the way of your legs.

Many of our slide out space-saving tables and worktops are soft close. They are straightforward to fit, however, we do recommend enlisting the skills of a carpenter to get the best finished result possible.
